Our Story
Federal Government Colleges in Nigeria were conceived with a singular, ambitious purpose: to be unifying institutions. They brought together young Nigerians from every ethnic and religious background, every corner of the country, and placed them in an environment where excellence was the only currency that mattered. No tribe, no creed, no social class. Just young Nigerians, learning to become one people.
Federal Government College Kano was founded in February 1973, on the grounds of an abandoned military barrack in Janguza, Kano, Kano State, with no electricity, no running water, and fewer than 100 students. What it did have was something more valuable: a founding spirit of possibility and a principal equal to the task.
Mr. Derek John Bullock, a British national and former principal of Government College Ibadan, took on the formidable challenge of building an institution from near nothing. Through compassion, discipline, and a fatherly resolve that alumni still speak of with reverence, he forged something extraordinary: a generation of Nigerians who were schooled not only in knowledge, but in the art of seeing each other as human beings first.
Today, a product of FGC Kano is recognizable in any room in Nigeria. Not by their name or tribe, but by the breadth of their thinking and the diversity of the friends they keep. The school graduated leaders in public service, medicine, law, finance, technology, and the arts. Its greatest graduate is the idea of a united Nigeria.
The FGCK Alumni Foundation exists to honor that inheritance and secure it for the next 50 years. Through alumni-led governance, transparent fundraising, and a bold Master Plan, we are returning to rebuild the institution that built us.
To transform Federal Government College Kano into Africa’s leading self-sustaining secondary educational ecosystem, driven by innovation, sustainability, technology, and institutional excellence.
To rebuild, modernize, and future-proof the institution through transparent alumni-led governance, sustainable infrastructure, diversified funding and world-class educational systems.
A Letter From Our Board
Chairman
Dear Alumni
Federal Government College Kano stands at a critical institutional crossroads. For over fifty years, this school gave us something no classroom alone could teach: the ability to see a fellow Nigerian first, and a label second. We arrived as strangers from every state and every background, and we left as one family. That is the inheritance we now carry, and it is the inheritance we are responsible for protecting.
The traditional model of relying almost entirely on government funding has become increasingly unsustainable in the face of rising inflation, infrastructure deterioration, escalating utility costs and the growing demands of a modern education. We can no longer wait for statutory allocations to determine the fate of the institution that shaped us.
That is why we commissioned a comprehensive 10-Year Integrated Redevelopment, Self-Sustainability and Revenue Generation programme, an alumni-driven institutional transformation initiative anchored on alumni funding, corporate partnerships, foundation grants and internal revenue generation, rather than dependence on government subventions.
This is not a charity appeal. It is an investment in an institution that has already proven, through every one of us, what it is capable of producing. With proper governance, transparent accounting and the collective will of more than five thousand financially active alumni across the world, we believe this transformation is not just possible, but achievable within a decade.
We invite you to read through the projects that follow, to meet the people guiding this work, and to join us, whether through the alumni community, a donation, or simply by carrying the name of this school forward with pride.
Pro Unitate.
